In analog photography, toning is a method of altering the color of black and white photographs. It is a chemical process carried out on metal salt-based prints such as silver prints, iron-based prints (cyanotype or Van Dyke brown), or platinum or palladium prints. Toning is used to not just to change the image color in order to exploit the aesthetic link between image color and emotion or for archival stability, but as well as for enriching the tonal values of an image to give deeper blacks and greater luminosity.
Instead of using alternative processes like cyanotype to create a „toned“ image, this workshop is aimed at everyone who is interested in producing their own monochrome darkroom prints and wants to learn about the methods of toning them.

In der analogen Fotografie ist das Tonen eine Methode zur Veränderung der Farbe von Schwarz-Weiß-Fotos. Es handelt sich um einen chemischen Prozess, der auf silber-basierten Fotos, auf Drucken auf Eisenbasis (Cyanotypie oder Van-Dyke-Braun) oder Platin- oder Palladiumdrucken durchgeführt wird. Tonen dient nicht nur dazu, die Bildfarbe zu verändern, um die ästhetische Verbindung zwischen Bildfarbe und Emotion auszudrücken oder für Archivstabilität zu sorgen, sondern auch zur Anreicherung der Tonwerte in einem Bild, um tiefere Schwarztöne und mehr Leuchtkraft zu erzielen.
Anstatt ein „getöntes“ Bild mit alternativen Verfahren, wie z.B. der Cyantopie zu erstellen, richtet sich dieser Workshop an alle, die Interesse daran haben, eigene monochrome Fotos in der Dunkelkammer herzustellen und die verscheidenen Methoden des Tonens kennenzulernen.
