The behaviour of the animals was difficult to control. In addition, special lenses were usually necessary to photograph animals in the wild. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, animal photography was particularly popular with amateurs, as it allowed them to show off their technical skills and passion. In respect to the competitions and group exhibitions, it was also advantageous to choose motifs that would appeal to a wide audience. The Schönbrunn zoo was a popular destination for photographers, as it was the only opportunity in Vienna to see rare and wild animals up close.
