Safe Zone deals with the disparity between supposedly safe places and the reality, in which human rights violations occur frequently, and sheds light on European migration politics and the humanitarian crises at the EU’s external borders.
The exhibition features photographs and texts that were realised on a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina together with SOS Balkanroute. They depict the stories of refugees who make their way to Europe in the hope of finding safety and experience illegal pushbacks, violence and dehumanisation instead.
People are portrayed who help these refugees on the local level and take action where the EU fails. Another topic is Srebrenica, which became the site of a genocide in 1995 despite its status as a UN protection zone.
