At the end of the 19th century, exposure times were long and adults had fixation devices to prevent the images from blurring. In early photographs of children one often recognises curtains or carpets in the background: under such textiles invisible mothers helped the children to pose and the role of women of that time is casually revealed.
Katharina Fröschl-Roßboth looks at family role models a hundred years later. For the portrait series, she visits fathers during their parental leave in Vienna and in Portugal’s No Man’s Land. Referring to the historical photographs, her gaze oscillates between tradition and change. Is there a social image of the father who does care work?
