Why do photographers, at the height of the digital world, use analog photography from the 19th century? If we can take color photos with our phone at any time, why should we repeat complicated analog color photographic processes that are over 100 years old? When we think of photography as a medium today, what role do analog processes play?

Rotlicht Festival’s Grand Prix Winner Alan Phelan embodies the tension between historical analog photography and a contemporary creative expression. Also, workshops at the Festival offer participants the chance to learn about the albumen process, salt paper printing, cyanotypes, etc. while curating the entire program propels the medium further in a hands-on direction.

This panel explores the analog dynamics between festivals, artists & historians.
