When the Soviet authorities demanded Kastute to work in the collective farm, she told them »you can dig a hole in front of my door and I will vanish«. Rather than working for the soviet system, she chose a life of modest self-determination tied to nature. As a consequence, Kastute never got an electricity connection to her house and never received pension. She died in 1990, only some months later Lithuania gained back its independence. She was 82 years old.
