This series of photos explores my friend Tam’s transition. I first met Tam when our sons started school, and about a year later, Tam came out as transgender. I witnessed the challenges they faced in coming out and rebuilding their life at home, with family, friends, and at work. After Tam‘s first consultation with a surgeon, we discussed the idea of capturing this pivotal journey. It became a way to mark their transition, offering a therapeutic outlet and highlighting the experience of transitioning outside government-supported healthcare. This series explores not just the physical transformation but also the emotional resilience and self discovery inherent in the process.

Kat Green is a portrait photographer based in Margate, U.K. She is one of the finalists in the Taylor Wessing portrait prize 2024 and has twice been shortlisted for Portrait of Britain (2021,2022). She predominantly shoots on 120 film.
